Yukon miners court investors in NYC

A consortium of seven Yukon mining companies is in New York this week, wooing prospective investors and promoting the territory as an attractive place to do business.

The Yukon Gold Mining Alliance, which formed earlier this year as a marketing consortium, consists of seven of the largest mining and exploration companies operating in the Yukon, including Capstone Mining Corp., which operates the Minto copper mine, and Alexco Resource Corp., which owns the Keno Hill silver property.

On Thursday, about 80 industry representatives gathered at a Manhattan hotel for a forum about mining in the Yukon, alliance chairman Scott Kent said.

"We were just here to talk about the Yukon," Kent said.

"We have seven member companies in our organization that are all very active, from advanced exploration through the development."

Attendees also heard from a couple of Yukon government representatives, including Harvey Brooks, deputy minister of economic development.

"It's important to bring them up to date as to what's going on in Yukon," Brooks said.

Yukon trips planned

Kent said the marketing trip to New York has not been so much about signing deals, but encouraging companies to take a closer look at the territory.

"One of the exciting things that we've got planned are some visits to the Yukon over the summer months, for investors and analysts and media people to come and see what we've got to offer," Kent said.

"The member companies thought that it would be a good idea to join forces and to talk about the Yukon and let people know that we have great infrastructure up there, we have access to ports, and the regulatory environment … is a lot more progressive than what we had before."

The Yukon Gold Mining Alliance also hosted a forum earlier this week in Toronto. Kent said there are plans to host a similar event in Europe.
